Generating and editing narratives
How to generate AI-drafted narratives and edit them before publishing.
Narratives are AI-drafted character summaries for each student, based on the observations teachers have logged. You review and edit every narrative before it goes anywhere.
Before generating:
The Narratives page automatically sorts students into three groups:
- Needs Attention — fewer than 3 observations. These students can't be generated yet. You can add a context note about the student to unlock generation even with thin data.
- Ready — enough observations to generate. These are included when you click Generate.
- Done — narrative already generated for this semester.
You can filter by semester and grade before generating.
Generating:
- Go to Narratives in the sidebar.
- Choose the semester and, optionally, a grade to filter.
- Click Generate All (or Generate Grade X if filtered).
The AI works through each ready student one at a time — you'll see a progress bar. It draws on the observation notes teachers wrote. The more specific the observations, the better the narrative.
Editing:
Generated narratives appear in the Review & Edit section. Each student has an editable text field. Make your changes and click Save. You can see who last edited each narrative and when.
Regenerating a single narrative:
If you're not happy with a narrative, click Regenerate on that student's card. This calls the AI fresh for just that student and replaces the text in the field. The previous version is not saved — if you want to keep parts of it, copy it out before regenerating.
Marking narratives as reviewed:
Once you've read and approved a narrative, click Mark reviewed. This adds a green checkmark to the card. Use the Unreviewed only filter at the top of the Review & Edit section to focus on what's left. If you try to publish or export while some narratives are still unreviewed, you'll see a warning so nothing slips through.
Every narrative is yours to shape. The AI gives you a draft; you give it your voice.
