The Middah Library

What the Middah Library is, how dispositions are organized, and what the three tabs contain.

The Middah Library is where all dispositions live. You can browse what's available, create your own, and decide which ones are active for your school each year.

What is a disposition?

A disposition is a named character strength — something like Gratitude, Perseverance, or Empathy. Your school activates up to 12 dispositions at a time, and those are what teachers observe and what appear on student profiles and narratives.

Families

Every disposition belongs to one of three families, which group strengths by their nature:

  • Heart — relational and emotional strengths (e.g. Empathy, Kindness, Gratitude)
  • Mind — intellectual and reflective strengths (e.g. Curiosity, Open-mindedness, Self-awareness)
  • Will — intentional and action-oriented strengths (e.g. Perseverance, Responsibility, Initiative)

Families are shown as colored badges throughout the app. They help teachers and students understand the shape of a student's character at a glance.

Observable indicators

Each disposition has a set of observable indicators — specific behaviors that teachers can recognize and log. For example, for Empathy, an indicator might be: "Notices when a classmate is upset and responds with care."

Indicators are what teachers actually select when logging an observation. The more specific and recognizable they are, the easier it is for teachers to connect a real moment to a character strength.

Definition

A disposition can also have a short definition — a sentence or two describing what the strength looks like in practice. This is optional but helps teachers and students develop a shared understanding of what the word means in your school's context.

The three tabs

  • Official — dispositions created and maintained by the Middah Map team. These are ready to use and cover the most common character frameworks in Jewish day schools.
  • Community — dispositions created by other schools and approved for sharing. A way to benefit from the broader Middah Map community.
  • My School — dispositions your school has created. You can create as many as you'd like here, and activate up to 9 at Year Rollover.

Activating dispositions

Browsing and creating dispositions can happen any time during the year. Which dispositions are active for your school is set at Year Rollover. Learn how Year Rollover works.
